Lieutenant Gábor

2021. 11. 04.

When I was a small boy, I spent all my time running around with my playmates within the walls of Eger.

Later as a strapping lad, I knew every nook and cranny of the castle, the palace, cellars, and the passages better than my Lord, the dusty-footed one. My intimate knowledge was also of great assistance to His Lordship István Dobó Fortress Commander. In 1552, so many infidels were camping below the fortress, you could barely see the surrounding fields and hills from their sea of white tents. During the siege, I served as Lieutenant to fifty riflemen, making a good name for myself for sure, with my strong voice, sturdy stature, and good rifle. I drove many miserable infidels into the welcoming arms of the Houris. Thankfully I am a dab hand with a long German rifle or heavy arquebus that shoots at far range. If Your Grace comes to the castle, do not fail to seek me out. I will guide you through the many bastions, palaces, passages, and cellars of this great fortress. Should you ask me how to master the art of shooting, I'll happily teach you all you need to know. You can't miss me! You'll recognise me by the black breastplate I wear, regardless of the season. It is heavy and uncomfortable in summer, but I never take it off. In the siege of 1552, I cannot tell you how many times I felt a stone, an arrow, or a bullet smash against my breastplate, it saving my life.
