According to historical documents at the sight of the castle that houses Mátra Museum today a manor house was established in 1770. The constructor was Lőrinc Orczy. The castle gained its present-day form during the 1824-26 reconstruction. This reconstruction was completed in the that time fashionable neoclassical style. The earlier U-shaped building was closed from north that time and with that the closed inner yard came to being and exists up to the present. In opposition to the facade of the building the baroque interior was kept in the southern and the western wing. The museum function of the building was gradually formed during the past fifty years. The widening museum work, the technological condition of the castle and the garden made the total reconstruction necessary. The opportunity came in 2002 when after a long preparation period, thanks to the mutual programme of Gyöngyös town local government, the owner of the building and Heves County Local Government, that backs the museum. The revitalisation and planning of the reconstruction, the excavation of the castle and the castle garden has started. On 15th May 2007. Minister István Hiller opened the new exhibitions.
The pride of the collection is the sole entire skeleton of a mammoth found intact in Hungary and exhibited here.
In 2009 with opening a brand new pavilion a three-storey exhibition of natural science was established, which presents mainly the flora and fauna of the Mátra mountains and the surroundings of Mátra. Besides, visitors can learn about the representatives of other continents’ biology. Living tropical creatures and plants are shown to the public in the palm house and a modern laboratory was also created.
