The Castle at Eger is one of Hungarian history’s most outstanding artifacts and monuments, having gained this place through its heroic defense against the siege of 1552. The István Dobó Castle Museum, which maintains and operates it, is among nation’s most frequented museum institutions, receiving over 400,000 visitors a year. On November 5, 2005, the national monument underwent an expansion: the addition of the renovated Dobó Bastion.
The medieval tower, built by Captain Dobó István between 1549-1552, collapsed in 1976. Rebuilding was done in two phases. In the latter half of the 1980s, the state sponsored the structural reconstruction of the bastion, but it was not until the implementation of the Széchenyi plan between 2002-2005 that the interior was rennovated. The bulk of the project’s funding came from the state, though significant contributions were made by the Heves County Government and the township of Eger as well.
The bastion has expanded to three levels, creating new possibilities for museum programmes and exhibitions. The underground rooms were carved out of 50,000 year-old sweetwater limestone, and have constant temperature and humidity regulation.
Under the auspices of the National Cultural Heritage Ministry’s Alpha-Program, the bottom two levels were designed to be exhibition halls for long-term exhibits of any sort, with cutting-edge security features. The first exhibit the bastion hosted was related to its original function: “Weapons of the World – the World of Weapons.”
The bastion’s third floor holds an advanced conference room. It is ideal not only for academic and professional conferences, but also for tourist programs and student or school group activities, to bring the sights and experiences of the rest of the Castle Museum to life. By use of mobile partitions, the conference room can be divided into three separate chambers.
The Dobó Bastion’s open terrace offers breathtaking views of the baroque town below. It is perfect for evening concerts or exclusive receptions.
For those with impaired mobility, an elevator runs down the bastion’s centre, making every floor easily accessible.
